Biografía
Krisjanis Kaktins-Gorsline is currently attending Columbia University's MFA program in New York and is a recent Graduate of the University of Manitoba's BFA program. Over the course of his education he has produced a body of work employing a variety of media and disciplines. He has also been engaged in a variety of exhibitions and activities within Winnipeg, New York, and elsewhere.
"The primary focus of my practice has been the production of figurative oil paintings created through a process of psychic auditing in which imagery is generated through a process of intuitive exploration. I would describe my practice as a cycle of ingestion, gestation and expulsion of imagery. I am interested in the way imagery is absorbed and then reconstituted in the mind. Using the Manitoban landscape as a stage, these paintings deploy a variety of content and techniques in order to form a site of organization for disparate information. These works negotiate the tradition of painting as it intersects with personal experience and a constructed linguistic economy. Rather than seeking a space of escapism, my paintings create an ambivalent space in which the personal meets spectacle to form a solipsistic narrative plexus. With my paintings I hope to short circuit paintings traditional appeal towards transcendence and create images that anticipate their own annihilation".
As a student at Columbia University, Krisjanis has become increasingly dedicated to the cultivation of a serious practice both in terms of the technical production and the exploration of the concepts within the work.
